Comprehensive Complication Index (CCI)

Single 0–100 score summarising all post-operative complications by severity (Slankamenac 2013). Derived from Clavien-Dindo grades using the formula: CCI = √(Σ wᵢ × 100). This calculator records the calculated CCI band — use the live calculator at assessurgery.com for exact value.

Score interpretation

No complications 0

→ Standard recovery and discharge planning.

Minor cumulative complications (CCI 1–20) 1

→ Manage individual complications per Clavien-Dindo. Discharge usually on schedule.

Moderate cumulative (CCI 21–40) 2

→ Multi-component complications — review whether intervention or escalation needed. May prolong length of stay; engage allied health and discharge planning early.

Major cumulative (CCI 41–60) 3

→ ICU level care often required. Mortality risk significant. M&M review. Family communication and goals-of-care discussion.

Severe cumulative / death (CCI 61–100) 4

→ Critical incident review; M&M; STIIs; coroner referral if appropriate; bereavement support; duty-of-candour conversation.
