Vascular Surgery Risk Score (VSG NSQIP)

Estimates 30-day mortality and morbidity risk for lower extremity bypass surgery. Based on Vascular Study Group NSQIP model.

Score interpretation

Low perioperative risk (<3% mortality)

→ Proceed with planned bypass; standard perioperative care; antiplatelet therapy perioperatively

Moderate perioperative risk (3-8%)

→ Cardiology assessment; echocardiogram if no recent; optimise comorbidities; consider endovascular alternatives; HDU post-op

High perioperative risk (>8%)

→ Senior surgeon and anaesthetist involvement; ICU planning; consider endovascular-first (EVAR/PTA) to avoid open surgery; detailed consent; MDT discussion

Interpretation bands for the VSG Risk Score. Apply clinical judgement and local guidance.
