Tinetti POMA — Performance-Oriented Mobility Assessment
16-item gait and balance assessment (Tinetti 1986). Total /28 (balance /16 + gait /12). Predicts falls risk in community-dwelling older adults. Widely used in UK falls clinics.
Score interpretation
→ Routine annual falls screen; encourage strength/balance exercise (e.g. Otago, tai chi).
→ Multifactorial falls assessment; vision/footwear/medication review; refer to falls service or physiotherapy.
→ Urgent multidisciplinary falls assessment per NICE CG161; home hazard assessment; consider hip protectors; bone health (DEXA, FRAX); review postural BP and polypharmacy.
