Modern Fasting Guidelines
AAGBI / ERAS:
• Clear fluids (water, clear juice, black coffee/tea — NO milk): 2h pre-op.
• Light meal (toast): 6h.
• Heavy / fatty / meat: 8h.
• Breastfed infants: 4h.
• Non-clear formula: 6h.
• Chewing gum + sweets: 2h.
Prolonged fasting harmful — dehydration, hypoglycaemia, insulin resistance, discomfort.
