Apgar Score (Neonatal)

Standardised assessment of newborn condition at 1 and 5 minutes after birth. Guides immediate resuscitation decisions.

Score interpretation

Normal (7-10)

→ Routine care; dry and stimulate; reassess at 5 min; skin-to-skin if stable

Moderate depression (4-6)

→ Supplemental oxygen; stimulate; repeat Apgar at 5 min; NLS algorithm; consider CPAP

Severe depression (0-3)

→ Immediate resuscitation: PPV; chest compressions if HR <60; intubation; adrenaline if no response; neonatal team emergency
