Assesses independence in 6 basic Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Standard tool for functional assessment in elderly and post-acute care.
Score interpretation

→ Maintain independence. Community support as appropriate. Annual functional review in elderly patients. Assess IADLs (instrumental ADLs) for additional support needs.
Katz ADL 4–5: Mild functional dependency in 1–2 ADLs.
→ Occupational therapy assessment. Home adaptations (grab rails, shower chair). Consider care package for dependent ADLs. Social work referral for care support planning.
Katz ADL 2–3: Moderate dependency in 3–4 ADLs.
→ Comprehensive geriatric assessment. Community occupational therapy. Carer support package or residential care assessment. Falls risk assessment. Consider rehabilitation.
