Oxford Hip Score (OHS)

12-item patient-reported outcome for hip arthroplasty / OA (Dawson 1996). Each item 0–4. Total 0–48 (higher = better).

Score interpretation

Severe (0–19) 0–19

→ Total hip arthroplasty consideration. Imaging + orthopaedic referral. Optimise comorbidities pre-op.

Moderate-to-severe (20–29) 20–29

→ Trial conservative: weight loss, paracetamol, topical NSAIDs, physiotherapy, walking aid. Refer for surgical opinion if persistent.

Mild-to-moderate (30–39) 30–39

→ NICE NG226 conservative: physiotherapy, analgesia ladder, intra-articular steroid in selected cases.

Satisfactory (40–48) 40–48

→ Maintain activity; reassess if change. No surgical indication from PROM alone.
