LENT Prognostic Score for Malignant Pleural Effusion

Predicts survival in patients with malignant pleural effusion (MPE). Scores LDH, ECOG status, NLR, and tumour type (LENT) to guide management decisions.

Score interpretation

Low Risk — Longer Survival 0–1

LENT score 0–1 — median survival >1 year

→ Aggressive management appropriate; tunnelled pleural catheter (TPC) or pleurodesis; systemic treatment ongoing

Moderate Risk 2–4

LENT score 2–4 — median survival ~3–6 months

→ Balance symptomatic management with quality of life; TPC preferred to serial thoracocentesis; palliative care input

High Risk — Poor Prognosis 5–7

LENT score 5–7 — median survival <3 months

→ Focus on symptom relief and quality of life; single therapeutic thoracocentesis; palliative care; avoid invasive procedures

Interpretation bands for the LENT Score. Apply clinical judgement and local guidance.
