Maximum Voluntary Ventilation (MVV) / Breathing Reserve
Estimates maximum voluntary ventilation and breathing reserve index from FEV1. Used in pre-operative respiratory assessment.
Score interpretation
Normal breathing reserve (>75%)
→ Low respiratory perioperative risk; standard monitoring
Reduced breathing reserve (50-75%)
→ Moderate respiratory risk; physiotherapy prehabilitation
Severely limited breathing reserve (<50%)
→ High perioperative risk; multidisciplinary pre-op assessment; consider non-surgical options
Interpretation bands for the MVV / Breathing Reserve. Apply clinical judgement and local guidance.
