Clinical monograph

How it works

It acts as an occlusive emollient, reducing water loss from the skin surface, and when instilled into the ear it softens hardened cerumen to aid its clearance.

Prescribing in practice

  • Avoid use in anyone with a known nut allergy because of the risk of an allergic reaction.
  • For earwax, it should not be used if there is a known or suspected perforated eardrum or ear infection.
  • It is for external or auricular use only and contact with the eyes should be avoided.

Monitoring

Monitoring is generally clinical, reviewing symptom relief and any local reaction.

Counselling the patient

  • Do not use if you have a nut allergy.
  • For earwax, warm the drops to body temperature and lie with the treated ear uppermost for a short time.
  • Stop and seek advice if irritation, pain or discharge develops.

Evidence & guidelines

Softening agents such as almond oil are recommended in current prescribing references to aid earwax removal and to relieve dry skin.
