How it works

The emollient base reduces transepidermal water loss to restore the skin barrier, while colloidal oatmeal provides additional hydrating, anti-irritant and antipruritic soothing effects.

Prescribing in practice

  • As with other paraffin-containing emollients, residue absorbed into clothing, bedding and dressings is flammable and patients must be advised to avoid naked flames and smoking.
  • Colloidal oatmeal can rarely provoke contact sensitisation, so review if irritation or worsening rash develops.
  • Use generously and frequently as a leave-on treatment rather than only at flares.

Monitoring

No blood monitoring is required; review skin hydration, itch control and any local reaction at follow-up.

Counselling the patient

  • Smooth on liberally and often, especially after washing, in the direction of hair growth.
  • Keep away from naked flames and avoid smoking; the product on skin and fabrics is flammable.
  • Stop and seek advice if the skin becomes more irritated.

Evidence & guidelines

Emollients are central to dry-skin and eczema care in NICE guidance, with colloidal oatmeal valued for its soothing, antipruritic properties.
