How it works

Undecenoic acid is a fatty acid with fungistatic activity against dermatophytes, while the zinc undecenoate component provides additional antifungal action and a mild astringent effect.

Prescribing in practice

  • It is for external use only and should be kept away from the eyes and mucous membranes.
  • Local skin irritation or sensitisation can occur; discontinue if irritation develops.
  • Treatment should continue for the full recommended course and for a period after symptoms resolve to reduce recurrence, as set out in current prescribing references.

Monitoring

Review the affected skin for resolution of infection and consider an alternative diagnosis or agent if there is no improvement.

Counselling the patient

  • Wash and dry the affected area thoroughly, especially between the toes, before applying.
  • Keep using it for the full course even after the skin looks better.
  • Keep feet dry and change socks regularly to help clearance and prevent recurrence.

Evidence & guidelines

Undecenoate-based preparations are long-established topical antifungals for superficial dermatophyte infections, supported by general clinical experience.
