Clinical monograph

How it works

Capsular polysaccharides from Hib and meningococcal group C are conjugated to a carrier protein, producing a T-cell-dependent immune response with protective antibodies and immunological memory in young children.

Prescribing in practice

  • It is contraindicated in those with a confirmed anaphylactic reaction to a previous dose or a vaccine component, and acute febrile illness warrants deferral.
  • It should be given at the recommended age according to the routine schedule for optimal protection.
  • Administer intramuscularly and follow the relevant Green Book chapter, the SPC and current prescribing references for timing and co-administration.

Monitoring

Routine antibody monitoring is not required; observe after vaccination for immediate hypersensitivity and ensure scheduled doses are given.

Counselling the patient

  • Keep your child's vaccinations up to date according to the routine schedule.
  • Mild fever and injection-site soreness can occur and usually settle within a day or two.
  • Seek advice if your child is unwell with a high fever after vaccination.

Evidence & guidelines

The Hib/MenC conjugate vaccine is part of the routine UK childhood immunisation schedule as set out in the Green Book.
