Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults (HHIA)

25-item self-report screening for adults <65 (Newman 1990; HHIE for ≥65). Emotional + Social/Situational sub-scales. Each item: No (0), Sometimes (2), Yes (4). Total 0–100.

Score interpretation

No or slight handicap 0

→ Reassurance. Re-screen if symptoms develop or every 3 years if at-risk occupation.

Mild–moderate handicap 1

→ Refer for diagnostic audiometry. Discuss hearing aids if SNHL >25 dB HL averaged 0.5–4 kHz; communication strategies.

Significant handicap 2

→ Urgent audiology referral; consider ENT review for asymmetric loss. Hearing aid fitting, assistive listening devices, ± cochlear implant assessment if severe-to-profound bilateral SNHL.
