Score interpretation
Katz 6/6: independent in all six basic ADLs.
→ Promote continued independence. Reassess at clinical change.
Katz 3–5: dependent in 1–3 basic ADLs.
→ Identify supportable domains; OT review, equipment provision, carer training. CGA indicated.
Katz ≤ 2: dependent in 4 or more basic ADLs.
→ Care package essential — domiciliary or residential care. Capacity assessment, advance care planning, carer support. Address reversible contributors (pain, polypharmacy, sensory loss, depression).
