Diabetic Neuropathy Symptom Score (DNS)
Screens for symptomatic diabetic peripheral neuropathy using four symptom questions (Meijer 2002). A DNS score of 1 or more is positive.
Score interpretation
No symptoms of distal diabetic polyneuropathy on the DNS.
→ Annual neuropathy screen; optimise glycaemic control; foot care education; annual foot risk assessment (NICE NG19).
One or more symptoms: positive for distal diabetic polyneuropathy (Meijer 2002). The score does not grade severity.
→ Neurological examination; confirm with 10g monofilament + vibration + ankle reflex; optimise HbA1c; consider duloxetine or pregabalin for painful neuropathy; foot protection
