Hamilton Score for DVT Clinical Probability
Predicts probability of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in outpatients. An alternative to the Wells DVT score with similar performance.
Score interpretation
Low DVT probability. DVT prevalence ~3–5%.
→ D-dimer test; if negative, DVT excluded; if positive, ultrasound duplex
Moderate DVT probability. DVT prevalence ~17%.
→ Ultrasound doppler of leg veins; D-dimer if ultrasound equivocal
High DVT probability. DVT prevalence ~75%.
→ Ultrasound doppler immediately; consider empirical anticoagulation while awaiting imaging
