Brand names: Striverdi Respimat
Olodaterol is an inhaled long-acting beta-2 agonist (LABA) used as maintenance bronchodilator therapy in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Adult dose
Dose adjustments
Renally impaired patients can use Striverdi Respimat at the recommended dose. There is limited experience with its use in patients with severe renal impairment (§4.2).
Dose auto-extracted from UK Summary of Product Characteristics (SPC) via the eMC — not yet clinician-verified. Always confirm against the product SmPC and your local formulary before prescribing.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to olodaterol or to any of the excipients (§4.3)
Side effects
- Nasopharyngitis — uncommon
- Dizziness — uncommon
- Rash — uncommon (may be considered a hypersensitivity reaction)
- Hypertension — rare
- Arthralgia — rare. As a long-acting beta2-agonist, class effects should also be considered: tachycardia, arrhythmia, palpitations, myocardial ischaemia, angina pectoris, hypertension or hypotension, tremor, headache, nervousness, insomnia, dizziness, dry mouth, nausea, muscle spasms, fatigue, malaise, hypokalaemia, hyperglycaemia and metabolic acidosis
Clinical monograph
How it works
It selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenoceptors on airway smooth muscle, causing sustained relaxation and bronchodilation.
Prescribing in practice
- It is a long-acting maintenance bronchodilator and must not be used for relief of acute bronchospasm or as monotherapy in asthma.
- Use with caution in cardiovascular disease and conditions sensitive to beta-agonists, and be aware of the risk of hypokalaemia.
- It is frequently prescribed in a fixed-dose combination inhaler with a long-acting antimuscarinic for COPD.
Monitoring
Monitor symptom control, lung function and exacerbation frequency, and remain alert to tachycardia, tremor and hypokalaemia.
Counselling the patient
- Use this inhaler regularly to keep your airways open, not for sudden breathlessness.
- Keep a separate fast-acting reliever inhaler for emergencies.
- Report palpitations, marked tremor or muscle cramps.
Evidence & guidelines
Long-acting beta-2 agonists are an established maintenance treatment for COPD within NICE and GOLD guidance.
