MUST Score (Malnutrition Screening)
Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool. Identifies patients at risk of malnutrition.
Score interpretation
MUST Score 0: Low malnutrition risk.
→ Routine clinical care. Repeat screening: weekly (hospital), monthly (care homes), annually (community).
MUST Score 1: Medium malnutrition risk.
→ Document 3-day food intake. If adequate, rescreen weekly. If inadequate: dietitian referral. Nutritional supplements.
MUST Score ≥2: High malnutrition risk.
→ Refer to dietitian. Commence nutritional support (ONS, NG/PEG if unable to eat). Weekly monitoring of food intake and anthropometry.
Interpretation bands for the MUST. Apply clinical judgement and local guidance.
