EVendo Score for Oesophageal Varices
Predicts the presence of oesophageal varices needing treatment (VNT) in patients with compensated cirrhosis. Helps identify patients who can safely avoid endoscopic screening.
Score interpretation
→ EVendo Score 3 (all criteria met): Very high probability of varices needing treatment. Oesophago-gastroduodenoscopy (OGD) required. Start non-selective beta-blocker (NSBB) if large varices confirmed; consider band ligation.
→ EVendo Score 2: High probability of varices. OGD recommended. If LSM >20 kPa or platelets <110 ×10⁹/L, consider NSBB empirically per Baveno VII criteria.
→ EVendo Score 1: Intermediate risk. OGD recommended; Baveno VII criteria (LSM <20 kPa AND platelets ≥150) may allow surveillance interval extension. Discuss with hepatologist.
→ EVendo Score 0: Low probability of varices needing treatment. Per Baveno VII, patients with LSM <20 kPa AND platelets ≥150 ×10⁹/L can safely avoid screening endoscopy. Annual non-invasive reassessment.
