Michigan PICC-Associated Thrombosis (MAT) Score
Predicts risk of PICC-associated upper extremity DVT in hospitalised patients.
Score interpretation
Low Risk 0–1
Low risk of PICC-DVT (~1–2%)
→ Routine use; no additional prophylaxis required
Moderate Risk 2–3
Moderate risk of PICC-DVT (~4–5%)
→ Consider minimising PICC lumen number; monitor closely
High Risk 4–8
High risk of PICC-DVT (~13%)
→ Consider alternative venous access; if PICC used, prophylactic anticoagulation may be warranted
