Clinical monograph

How it works

Flumetasone pivalate is a corticosteroid that reduces local inflammation, while clioquinol provides antibacterial and antifungal activity in the ear canal.

Prescribing in practice

  • It should be avoided when the tympanic membrane is perforated unless specifically directed, as instillation into the middle ear is generally not recommended.
  • Clioquinol can stain skin and clothing, and may interfere with thyroid function tests.
  • As with other topical ear corticosteroid combinations, treatment is kept short-term.

Monitoring

Review the ear clinically for response and check the tympanic membrane status before and during treatment.

Counselling the patient

  • Use only in the affected ear as directed.
  • Be aware the drops may stain skin or clothing.
  • Return if symptoms do not improve or the ear becomes more painful.

Evidence & guidelines

Combined corticosteroid and anti-infective ear drops are an established treatment for inflamed, infected otitis externa in UK practice.
