Clinical monograph
How it works
The hyaluronate binds water and forms a long-lasting, stable lubricating film on the ocular surface, reducing friction and supporting corneal and conjunctival hydration.
Prescribing in practice
- Although preservative-free and suitable for frequent use, advise patients to seek review if symptoms persist or worsen, as persistent dry eye may indicate an underlying ocular surface disorder requiring further assessment.
- Can be used as often as required and is generally suitable for use with contact lenses, but confirm against the product information.
- The multidose preservative-free bottle typically remains usable for an extended period after opening; check the labelled in-use shelf life.
Monitoring
No laboratory monitoring is needed; assess symptom relief and ocular surface condition at clinical review.
Counselling the patient
- Expect brief blurring after each drop and wait for vision to clear before driving or operating machinery.
- Store and use within the in-use period stated on the bottle and avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any surface.
Evidence & guidelines
Preservative-free lubricants are favoured for frequent or long-term dry eye treatment to avoid preservative-induced ocular surface toxicity, consistent with NICE dry eye guidance.
