RENAL Nephrometry Score
Standardised scoring of renal tumour anatomy for surgical planning. Predicts operative complexity and guides decision between partial and radical nephrectomy.
Score interpretation
RENAL Score 4–6 — low complexity tumour
→ Partial nephrectomy (nephron-sparing) strongly preferred; suitable for laparoscopic or robotic approach; low risk of major complications
RENAL Score 7–9 — moderate complexity tumour
→ Partial nephrectomy feasible; higher risk of perioperative complications; experienced surgeon required; open approach may be preferred
RENAL Score 10–12 — high complexity tumour
→ Radical nephrectomy often needed; partial nephrectomy possible in experienced centres; discuss risk of warm ischaemia time and blood loss; tertiary urology centre referral
