Blood Volume Calculation (Nadler Formula)

Estimates total blood volume (TBV) using Nadler formula based on sex, height, and weight. Used to calculate safe maximum blood loss and red cell exchange volumes.

Score interpretation

Blood Volume Estimated (Small)

→ Total Blood Volume (TBV) estimated. Maximum Allowable Blood Loss (MABL) = TBV x (Hb_current - Hb_target) / Hb_current. Red cell exchange volume for sickle cell = target fraction exchange x TBV. Normal: males ~75 mL/kg, females ~65 mL/kg.

Blood Volume Estimated (Average)

→ TBV estimated in normal range. MABL = TBV x (Current Hb - Target Hb) / Current Hb. Use to guide transfusion strategy, cell salvage planning, and red cell exchange in haemoglobinopathies. Consider erythrocytapheresis volume.

Blood Volume Estimated (Large)

→ Large TBV estimated. MABL = TBV x (Current Hb - Target Hb) / Current Hb. Review patient BMI for accuracy; consider obesity-adjusted blood volume. Consult haematology for exchange transfusion planning.

Interpretation bands for the Blood Volume. Apply clinical judgement and local guidance.
