Brand names: Gelofusine, Volplex

Succinylated gelatin is a colloid intravenous fluid used for short-term plasma volume expansion in hypovolaemia.

Dosing — being independently re-sourced

ClinCalc Pro is rebuilding its dose data from primary open sources — the manufacturer SmPC (eMC), the WHO Model Formulary and other official references — under clinician review. This drug's structured dose is not yet published here. Confirm all doses against the product SmPC and your local formulary before prescribing.

Clinical monograph

How it works

As a colloid solution it increases intravascular oncotic pressure, transiently expanding plasma volume to support circulating volume and blood pressure.

Prescribing in practice

  • Anaphylactoid reactions can occur — stop the infusion immediately and treat if signs of hypersensitivity develop.
  • Use with caution in patients at risk of fluid overload, such as those with significant cardiac or renal impairment.
  • Assess fluid status and response rather than relying on volume infused, and consider crystalloids per current resuscitation guidance.

Monitoring

Monitor blood pressure, heart rate, fluid balance and signs of hypersensitivity or fluid overload during and after infusion.

Counselling the patient

  • Explain that this drip helps restore circulating fluid volume.
  • Advise reporting itching, rash, breathlessness or swelling promptly.
  • Note for the team that gelatin colloids carry a risk of allergic reactions.

Evidence & guidelines

Gelatin solutions are colloids used for volume expansion, though crystalloids are generally preferred for initial fluid resuscitation in current guidance.
