How it works
The paraffin and wool fat base forms an occlusive lipid film that reduces tear evaporation and protects the cornea, while retinol palmitate supports normal epithelial and conjunctival surface integrity.
Prescribing in practice
- Ointment bases blur vision transiently, so apply at bedtime or warn patients not to drive or operate machinery until vision clears.
- Wool fat (lanolin) can cause sensitisation, so use with caution in patients with known lanolin allergy.
- Not compatible with soft contact lenses, which should be removed before application.
Monitoring
No routine laboratory monitoring is required; review symptom control and ocular surface integrity clinically.
Counselling the patient
- Apply inside the lower eyelid and expect temporary blurring afterwards.
- Discard the tube within the recommended period after opening to avoid contamination.
- Seek review if eye pain, redness or discharge develops.
Evidence & guidelines
Use is supported by established ophthalmic practice for dry eye and corneal protection rather than a specific landmark trial.
