Vindesine sulfate is a vinca alkaloid cytotoxic administered intravenously for certain leukaemias and solid tumours.

How it works
It binds tubulin and inhibits microtubule assembly, halting cell division at metaphase.
Prescribing in practice
- It is for intravenous use only and is fatal if given intrathecally; spinal-injection safety procedures must be followed.
- Myelosuppression and peripheral neuropathy are the main dose-limiting toxicities.
- It is a vesicant specialist cytotoxic requiring extravasation precautions and expert oversight.
Monitoring
Monitor full blood count before dosing and assess regularly for peripheral neuropathy and signs of infection.
Counselling the patient
- Report signs of infection such as fever or sore throat without delay.
- Report numbness, tingling or muscle weakness.
- Alert staff immediately to any pain or swelling at the injection site.
