How it works

The terpene constituents are thought to have antispasmodic and mild diuretic actions on the urinary tract, which may facilitate stone passage, though the mechanism is not fully defined.

Prescribing in practice

  • It is an adjunct only and does not replace assessment for obstruction, infection or stones requiring urological intervention.
  • Use with caution in pregnancy and avoid where a urinary obstruction needs definitive management.
  • Capsules are usually taken before food and should be swallowed whole.

Monitoring

No specific laboratory monitoring is required; review symptoms and confirm stone passage or the need for further urological assessment.

Counselling the patient

  • This medicine is intended to help small stones pass and ease colic.
  • Seek medical help for severe pain, fever or inability to pass urine.

Evidence & guidelines

Terpene combination preparations are used as adjuncts in urolithiasis, with definitive stone management guided by NICE guidance on renal and ureteric stones (NG118).
