Fresh frozen plasma (FFP)

Brand names: Octaplas (solvent-detergent)

Fresh frozen plasma (FFP) is a blood component containing clotting factors, used to replace coagulation factors in bleeding or before procedures in patients with significant coagulopathy.

Dosing — being independently re-sourced

ClinCalc Pro is rebuilding its dose data from primary open sources — the manufacturer SmPC (eMC), the WHO Model Formulary and other official references — under clinician review. This drug's structured dose is not yet published here. Confirm all doses against the product SmPC and your local formulary before prescribing.

Clinical monograph

How it works

It supplies the full range of plasma coagulation factors and proteins, supporting clot formation where multiple factors are deficient.

Prescribing in practice

  • FFP should only be transfused for clinically significant coagulopathy with bleeding or before invasive procedures, not to correct minor abnormalities or as a volume expander.
  • ABO compatibility is required and transfusion reactions, including transfusion-related acute lung injury, can occur.
  • It must be given with correct patient identification and observation as for any blood component.

Monitoring

Monitor coagulation results and clinical bleeding to assess response, and observe closely for transfusion reactions during and after administration.

Counselling the patient

  • You will be observed during the transfusion for any reaction.
  • Report fever, breathlessness, rash or feeling unwell during the infusion.
  • The team will explain why a plasma transfusion is needed in your case.

Evidence & guidelines

Restricting FFP to clinically significant coagulopathy reflects NICE blood transfusion guidance and national transfusion recommendations.
